Love of Reading

What Happens During Love of Reading?

Picture
Love of Reading will function as part free reading, part book group.  There will be an administrator for the group, whether it is a teacher, librarian, or even a social worker.  It is not a classroom, therefore any adult with a passion for helping students read at a higher level will be welcome to participate.

Because it is used in conjunction with the school, it will be advertised as a club.  Therefore, it is important to have a social aspect to it, in order to entice students and make it a fun after-school activity.  At times, it could also meet during lunch.

Love of Reading will be an hour long.  The first thirty minutes will be silent reading.  Students will sit quietly reading the book of their choice.  After the thirty minutes are up, students will have the chance to share what they are reading with their peers, and talk about some of the themes they have discovered in their books.  Having a chance to share their excitement about a particularly enjoyable book, or recommend books to their peers will help keep all students engaged.

ELL students will also be encouraged to read books at their reading level.  They will not be required to read Shakespeare, like in English classes, but instead they will be able to read lower level books as a way of building up comprehension and to really learn to love reading.

The better the students get, the easier reading will become, and the more they will enjoy it.

Love of Reading can build better readers, and can also prove that reading is not a chore to dread, but an activity to enjoy.
