Love of Reading

Reading is FUNdamental

Love of Reading is a program centered around ELL (English Language Learner) high school students to assist them in learning to become better readers, able to comprehend faster, and to enjoy the written word.  For students coming from a non-English speaking home, this can prove to be a true challenge.  By making reading fun, students will learn faster without even realizing it.

Adolescents need to be able to read effectively to excel in any subject from English to math, and especially need to be proficient readers to find success outside of school.  Love of Reading is designed to show students that reading can be fun.  That with a lot of work, as they get better and better, they will start to see a significant and positive change in all subjects.

Love of Reading is not designed as a punishment for students who are struggling with the English language.  It is not a place to be embarrassed by a low reading proficiency.  Instead it is a group environment, meant to be nurturing and fun.  Students will be allowed to read anything they wish (with parental consent if they choose a book deemed "inappropriate").  Love of Reading is not a study hall to do other homework, or ask questions about class work.  It is designed so that students feel they are sharing and communicating with other students as they read their way through the school year.

The core of the program is that the books the students choose are what they want to read.   Not what an English teacher or parent suggests, but what catches the eye of the student.  Enjoyment is at the core of Love of Reading.
